What Does a 'Free Display' Really Mean for Independent Retailers?

A free display usually means the fixture cost is included or subsidized within a qualifying opening eyewear program. An independent retailer still needs to evaluate the complete cash, space, labor, and inventory commitment.

Ask what free actually covers

  • Who owns the display?
  • What opening order is required?
  • Are freight, assembly, signage, and installation included?
  • Who handles damage and replacement parts?
  • Are there reorder minimums, exclusivity, or exit conditions?
  • What happens to the fixture if the category is removed?

Compare total program economics

Calculate landed inventory cost, payment timing, backstock, maintenance time, and the opportunity cost of the floor or counter space. Then compare gross-profit contribution, availability, reorders, and inventory age.

Do not overbuy to earn a fixture

The correct display is the smallest format that can represent the category credibly. A supplied fixture is valuable only when the opening assortment, service model, and space productivity make sense.

Set decision rules before launch

Define 30, 60, and 90-day checks and the conditions for reordering, rebalancing, relocation, expansion, or exit.
