What Does a 'Free Display' Really Mean for Hotel Operators?

A free display for a full-service hotel is not a free category. The fixture may be supplied, but the property still commits merchandise, lobby-market space, staff time, and replenishment.

Clarify what is included

  • fixture ownership and return conditions
  • opening order and assortment assumptions
  • freight, assembly, installation, and signage
  • reorder minimums and lead times
  • damage, credits, substitutions, and replacement parts
  • exit terms if the category is removed

Calculate total operating economics

Include landed merchandise, payment timing, setup, backstock, staff maintenance, and the opportunity cost of lobby or market space. Compare these costs with contribution, guest requests, availability, reorders, and aging.

Match the fixture to the hotel

The display should fit guest flow and the property's normal and conference-period needs. Do not accept more capacity than the hotel can maintain.

Review before expanding

Use 30, 60, and 90-day checkpoints before increasing inventory or adding another location.
