Empty positions are useful early-warning signals because they show where demand, replenishment, or fixture maintenance is failing before the whole category looks weak.
Not every empty position means the same thing
- Fast sell-through: the item is popular and needs more depth.
- Backstock failure: refill inventory exists but was not placed.
- Supplier lead-time issue: the store reordered too late.
- Damage or shrink: the item disappeared without a sale.
- Assortment imbalance: some powers or styles were underallocated from the start.
Track repeated gaps
A single empty peg is not a strategy. Repeated empties in the same reader power or frame family are stronger evidence that the allocation should change.
Use the display as a visual dashboard
During each service review, note which positions are empty, nearly empty, or repeatedly disorganized. That visual information can be compared with sales and backstock to decide the next order.
Fix the cause, not just the gap
Refilling the position solves today's appearance. Adjusting depth, reorder timing, or service ownership prevents the same gap from returning.
