A new eyewear category can remain low-labor when customers can shop it independently and staff can reset and replenish it through a simple routine. The merchandising system should do most of the explanatory work.
Design for self-service
- clear reader-power labels
- visible prices
- logical style organization
- mirror access
- easy-to-reach product
Give staff one short routine
A rack review should take minutes: return misplaced frames, identify empty positions, refill from backstock, note damage or shrink, and flag reorder needs.
Assign one owner
The category does not need a dedicated employee, but it does need clear responsibility. When everyone owns it, no one may notice stockouts or disorder.
Do not create unnecessary selling scripts
Staff should be able to orient customers and answer basic questions without turning the category into a consultative sale.
