Boutiques should size eyewear backstock around proven frame demand, reader-power gaps, supplier lead time, and the amount of inventory the store can keep visible and accessible. Backstock should refill winners, not duplicate every style on the rack.
Separate style breadth from refill depth
The selling display may need many silhouettes and colors to create comparison. Backstock does not. Use backstock to protect the styles and powers that have already shown they deserve duplicate units.
How to size the refill layer
- cover expected sales during normal supplier lead time
- deepen proven styles before adding duplicates behind slow ones
- protect reader powers that repeatedly stock out
- add temporary depth before holiday or travel peaks when the store has evidence for it
Watch hidden inventory
Backstock should be labeled by style, color, and power and stored where staff can reach it. If the team cannot locate it quickly, the customer-facing rack can look empty while the store technically owns the inventory.
When to reorder
Do not wait until the display is depleted. Reorder when on-hand inventory can no longer cover expected demand through the next supplier delivery.
Backstock checklist
- Which frame families have reordered?
- Which reader powers disappear first?
- How long is lead time?
- Is backstock easy to locate?
- Are slow styles receiving unnecessary duplicates?
